Duna Filoseta - Studio Art

As cliche as this may be, art has always been a massive part of my life. In my childhood, I was constantly drawing on any surface I could find, from the paper to the walls to even the living room couch. At age twelve, I began to see art as more than a hobby--it was an escape for me. Getting lost in my sketchbook was just a way that I would heal from any of the turmoils I dealt with in my life. And I realized that it was something that I wanted to pursue seriously. So I entered the Ramon C. Cortines (Grand Arts) High School and became a part of the Visual Art department. There I would explore and dabble in various forms of art, such as photography, ceramics, drawing, and painting. However, it would be when I took a 2-D art class that I realized where my true passion lied in sculpture.

My sculptural works explore identity and mental health. I enjoy working with a wide range of different and unexpected materials from chicken wire and clay to fiber and paper.

As an emerging artist, I strive to have my work seen. Yet, I'm often self-conscious about how people see me as an artist. And if I want to be seen at all. I'm exploring this dichotomy with a new “Don’t Perceive Me” series. Gallery visitors can interact with these cage-like installations to obscure themselves within the piece.

I'm fascinated by the way small elements accrete to make larger wholes. The way grains of sand assemble to create large dunes, and then drift away into other configurations. The way our lives are collections of experiences with other people, spaces, and events. I'm exploring this phenomenon in a "Paper Stars" series. Here I follow a repetitive practice of obsessively folding thousands of origami stars. In exhibiting these works I hope viewers will consider the way small elements build up our lives and identities. And perhaps they'll take one of my stars to become an element of their journey going forward.
